This diagram shows a highly simplified ecosystem. <I>Ecosystem</I> is a scientific term for all the living and nonliving things in a given area and the relationships among them. In any ecosystem, the most important relationships involve the movement of food and energy through the system, starting with the sun and involving the other main parts of the ecosystem. In the diagram, each of the six main parts of the ecosystem is color-coded as indicated by the key.
